Frequently Asked Questions

What are state-by-state car insurance requirements and what are the minimum requirements per state?

By law each of the 50 United States is required to have specific minimum car insurance requirements for their residents. These stipulations can usually be found on your state insurance commissioner’s website, and are used to help car insurance companies with calculating auto insurance rates.

Each state will require that their resident has one or a number of the various types of auto insurance coverage listed below:

  • Bodily Injury (BI)
  • Physical Damage Liability (PD)
  • No-Fault Personal Injury Protection (PIP)
  • Uninsured Motorist (UM)
  • Underinsured Motorist (UIM)

It is worth mentioning that the least amount of auto insurance is not always the best policy to sign up for, but it is much better than the penalities of driving without car insurance. In order to determine what the minimum requirements are in your state we ask that you visit the table below where you will find your state name, required coverage, and the minimum liability limits. The first two numbers refer to bodily injury liability limits, while the third number focuses on property liability.
