What is The Difference Between Comprehensive and Collision?

When getting car insurance quotes on your car you'll no doubt be asked if you'd like both collision and comprehensive insurance. Knowing what each of these insurance types cover, and their differences will go a long way in helping you choose the best amount of insurance coverage for your situation.

Collision - Collision insurance is pretty straight forward, if you are hit by, or hit another car you are covered by your insurance. This also includes if you hit an object, roll over, or any type of physical accident you may be in.

Comprehensive - Comprehensive covers other damage that may happen to your car from things like:

  • Vandalism
  • Theft
  • Acts of God

However this will not cover you if you are on the road and get into an accident. While comprehensive gives you more overall coverage on your car, with covering all the other various mishaps that may occur.

Most would have comprehensive insurance on a car that is stored for the winter or not in use on the road, and then change to include collision when the car is back on the road. In either case should you have to make a claim on your car insurance quotes, you'll have to pay up to the deductible before the insurance will start covering the rest.
